Saguaros of the Sonoran Desert
A Show Featuring more than 10 New Oil Paintings by Neil Myers
SCOTTSDALE, AZ – After drying in his studio for months, more than ten new oil paintings from Arizona artist Neil Myers will be available for the first time at a Scottsdale art gallery at the end of January. The Marshall | LeKAE Gallery of Fine Art is pleased to host “Saguaros of the Sonoran Desert” an exhibition featuring the works of Myers opening on January 24 during Scottsdale ArtWalk.
While traveling the American Southwest in 2003 with his wife, Myers was drawn to New Mexican and Arizonan Vistas. His favorite subjects quickly became the mighty saguaros, old missions, the stunning red rocks of Sedona, and the magnificent views of the Grand Canyon.
Myers’ show at Marshall | LeKAE will feature the iconic Arizona image and state flower, the mighty saguaro.
“I was interested in making a group of paintings in which Saguaros would provide the common theme and anchor point,” said Myers. “I decided early on that I wanted to maximize the color schemes used in all of the works into a spring-themed yellows, reds, blues and greens – in order to depict Saguaros surrounded by hues that show the desert at its most vibrant point of the seasons.”
He says he never tires painting saguaros because he has never seen any two that are the same. “They might be one of the few plants with true personality,” said Myers.
“Under the white-hot light of the Sonoran Desert, these “Giants of the Desert”, as I call them, live and thrive and make us cast our eyes up vertically as we admire their almost anthropomorphic shapes,” Myers explained.
In addition to his own reference photos, Myers used images from award-winning Arizona photographer Paul Gill, who will also be at the opening, as reference for some of his paintings.
“Saguaros of the Sonoran Desert” will open Thursday, January 24, 7-9p.m., at The Marshall | LeKAE Gallery of Fine Art, 7106 East Main Street, Scottsdale, AZ. The new works featured in the show will be available online beginning Monday, January 21, on the gallery’s website and Facebook page.

Besides his wife and two sons, one of them born on Thanksgiving Day 2012, painting is his passion.
